EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
