Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these drugs must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
