Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
